- You're paying to heat and cool through it. Once the argon escapes, that window insulates roughly like single-pane glass — every month, in both seasons.
- Moisture works on the frame. Persistent condensation around a failed unit can stain, swell and eventually rot wood sills and surrounds — turning a glass repair into an actual frame repair.
- A crack spreads. Temperature swings walk a small crack across the pane. Annealed glass that's already fractured is a safety concern, especially at ground level or anywhere near a walkway.
- It shows up in appraisals and inspections. Fogged panes are one of the first things a home inspector flags — and one of the easiest things for a buyer to negotiate against.
